Nigerian FA under fire for age cheating
- Updated: August 5, 2016
Nigeria are to be without almost their entire U17 first team football squad after a staggering 26 players from 60 eligible players failed the mandatory MRI screening which tests players ages. The camp is now in turmoil as only 2 players from the first XI are of the correct age.
MRI tests are considered to be 99% accurate up to the age of 17 and have been used for several years to prevent age fraud in football. The ‘Super Eagles’ have an AFCON qualifier at home to Niger, this Saturday.
One official has said “It is a disaster. Virtually the first team the coaches have been working on have been disqualified. It’s a serious problem.” Nigeria have a long history of success at U17 level, having lifted the U17 World Cup a record five times.
Questions had always been asked on why Nigeria is dominant in the junior level of world football but are nowhere to be seen in the senior level…Well…now we know.
